Feng Shui your House and Find your Happy Place

Spending a loooooot of time at home, aren’t you? Yup, so are we.  At Omnifique, we are passionate about interior design and Feng Shui. All of the houses on our portfolio have been chosen because we fell in love with them. They have that extra something that sometimes you can’t even put into words – even though we try!

The truth is, that extra *something*, the IT factor can sometimes be a general sense of wellbeing when you enter a home. Walking into the kitchen and feeling peaceful. An organized office that basically makes you want to sit at the desk and finish that project. Or a bedroom where you can forget about the world, relax, and sleep away all your worries.

Now that we’re spending all that time at home with our loved ones feels like a great opportunity to replicate that amazing feeling we get at our short term rentals in our own spaces.

Feng Shui is a great way to start. This ancient Chinese practice transforms negative energies that affect your health, finance, and relationships, into a positive state of wellbeing, that hopefully generates prosperity, health, and abundance. Just what we need in this time of change and uncertainty, right?

So, read on to discover how to become a Feng Shui master:

What is Feng Shui Anyway?

As we’ve said, Feng Shui is a Chinese practice that, according to some sources, dates back to even 4,000 B.C. In the Western hemisphere, the first book on the subject was published in 1873. If you’re just now catching up to it, there’s lots to learn. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

Feng Shui is all about how the energy flows around your house, how the objects in each room help it achieve its purpose, how colors and materials allow things to happen. It takes into account significant factors, like the actual location of your property. Still, it also involves details that may seem irrelevant, like the place you choose to display your books.

So, let’s focus on the things you can change and learn how to Feng Shui your house:

Entryway

The main entrance to your home is where all that positive energy comes in. This is why this space needs to be clutter-free, nothing should be able to stop the flow of energy. If you have plants by your entryway, make sure there are no cacti or other species with thorns on them. Make sure this area is adequately lit. A Feng Shui mirror is also a great addition to your entryway, just make sure they’re not the first thing you’ll see as you walk in. This can make energy bounce back out.

Going back to the placement of your books: if a library is the first thing you see as you walk in the door, great. That first look inside your house should be inspiring and joyful, as it defines the entire mood of the home. If it’s an art piece, make sure it’s uplifting. Heirloom trinkets, black and white photos, and things like that only bring in nostalgia and melancholy. Don’t throw them out – just place them somewhere else.

Bedroom

According to the Feng Shui practices, if you share the room with your partner or if it’s just yours, this area of the house directly influences your relationships.

There is a recurring concept in Feng Shui, called the commanding position. It refers to the way you place your furniture in each area. In essence, its location relates to your position in life. In the bedroom, the bed has to be in the commanding position, meaning you should be allowed to see who walks in from the bed. Also, to foster equality in relationships, you should be able to access the bed from both sides.

If you’re having trouble sleeping, soft textures like wool, velvet, and cotton can help. Rugs and blankets are great additions, especially if the bedroom features hard floors. Another thing you can do is leaving all electricity (except light) out of the bedroom. Yeah, you know it: phones and TVs out! You want to create a calm vibe inside your Feng Shui master bedroom.

Kitchen

Some Feng Shui experts claim that your kitchen affects your finances and your health. Particularly the stove: make sure it always works if you want to keep that money coming in. The commanding position also rules your oven: you should see who walks into the room from its standing point to nurture abundance and to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Home Office

If you’re working from home, taking care of your office is vital. This area of your house, of course, represents your career. You need a strong foundation for your success, so always use a chair with a sturdy back to support you. Your Feng Shui office desk should also be in the commanding position and always clutter-free. Although facing a window may seem like a good idea, this may distract you from your primary focus.
