Gem‌ ‌of‌ ‌the‌ ‌Month:‌ ‌Marigold‌

Marigold is perfectly located in walkable distance to downtown Boulder and the hiking trails. This home is a sunny retreat for those seeking quiet times among loved ones. With an interesting backstory and plenty of cute little nooks, let’s hear from the homeowners what makes this property unique.

What was the overall concept behind the design in the house?

It was built in 1917 for the head doctor of the Sanitas Clinic/Sanatorium, after which the local mountain was named “Mt. Sanitas”. The house was designed by a Swedish architect in a Craftsman style, of which he apparently took pride in saying he was the best architect in the city at the time. Most of the house retains its original design and materials. We remodeled and restored the kitchen in 2014 to reflect the history and period of the home.

What is your favorite corner in the house?

The library is a great reading room for a quiet escape, but we tend to enjoy time in our large and bright kitchen for cooking, hosting, and listening to music. During the summer, it’s hard to pick a favorite between the backyard patio with the running fountain or the covered front porch with additional shade provided by the large trees.

What drew you to this property in the first place?

Location, given it’s walkable distance to downtown, access to the trails, but the history in particular as it has the amenities and pride of place as an esteemed doctor would have expected, but with a touch of modesty in comparison to some of the larger, mansion-like properties adjacent.

What type of experiences shouldn’t guests miss out while staying at your home?

The trail up Sunshine Canyon is a must-do, besides the obvious Sanitas hiking trail. And everyone should venture “one-stop sign away” to the town of Gold Hill for an escape back in time and to the cooler mountain air. The Gold Hill Inn does take out dinner on Friday evenings during the current COVID crisis, and the Gold Hill Pub and Cafe has modest meals and drinks in the day. It’s a hidden gem.
